What is the Amazon Future Engineer Scholarship?

The Amazon Future Engineer Scholarship was founded by Amazon to help support underserved students pursue an education in computer science. It also provides support to students in related fields.

Different Types of Scholarships

Winners of the AFE scholarship receive $40,000 to put toward the cost of their college education. They also get a paid internship at Amazon for at least one of the summers between school years. This opportunity will help them gain valuable skills and networks that they can use after they graduate. 

How to apply for the Amazon Future Engineer Scholarship

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for the AFE Scholarship, you must meet these requirements:

  • Must be able to legally work in the US 

  • Be a high school senior in the US and have completed or be currently enrolled in a computer science class

    • If you haven’t taken a formal computer science class but have learned about the subject on your own, you can take a brief assessment instead

  • Be planning to earn a bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, computer engineering or another computer-science related field 

  • Have a minimum 3.0 GPA

  • Must demonstrate financial need

Outside of the US, there are also programs available for students in:

  • Canada

  • France

  • Germany

  • India

  • United Kingdom

The application

The AFE Scholarship accepts applications online. Let’s break down the process.

  • Step 1. Visit the Hub, Scholarship America’s application system

  • Step 2. Create an account

  • Step 3. Provide some required documents:

    • A short answer response to 3 prompts, including your career and educational goals

    • A letter of recommendation from a teacher, preferably your computer science teacher

    • Academic transcript

    • Your family’s most recently filed Form 1040

The scholarship uses a holistic approach to decide on recipients and focuses on the following factors:

  • How well you do in the classroom, primarily based on GPA

  • Computer science experience—for example, after-school clubs, competitions, self-taught learning, hackathons, and more

  • Work experience

  • Short answer responses

  • Financial need—usually based on household income

  • Teacher recommendation

  • Racial, ethnic, and gender diversity

Important dates to remember

If you’re applying for the AFE Scholarship, these are the dates you should know:

  • Applications open: Sometime in November

  • Applications close: February 1

  • Awards announced: By June 1
