UNL automatically considers every admitted student for academic scholarships based on GPA—no standardized test required. However, test scores can boost your chances and award amount.

Student loans
Student loans are another way to cover UNL’s cost of attendance.
However, you have to pay back your loans plus interest. Some loans don’t make you pay them back until after you leave school—whether you graduate, drop out, or fall below a certain enrollment level.
Others may require payback while in school.
Federal Direct Loans come from the federal government and are some of the most common loan types because of their protections and low interest rates.
There are two types for undergraduates:
Subsidized: Interest doesn’t start building up until you leave the school and a 6-month grace period ends. Interest doesn’t build up if you defer your enrollment, either.
Unsubsidized: Interest starts building up immediately.
Neither type requires payments until your grace period ends. That way, you have time to find a job before paying back loans.
Private loans can bridge any gaps that federal loans and other forms of aid don’t cover. These tend to have higher interest rates and fewer protections than government loans, so you should be careful.

FAFSA
Every student should fill out the Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as early as possible for each year they attend college. The federal government uses your FAFSA info to determine what federal aid you’re eligible for and how much.
Using the FAFSA, the government calculates your expected family contribution (EFC). They use that to decide how much money you qualify for.
You can fill out the FAFSA on October 1 before the academic year for which you’d like to file. The deadline is usually the last day of June of the year you attend.
For example, if you’re filing for the 2021–2022 academic year, the first day you could have applied was October 1, 2020. The deadline is June 30, 2022.

How do I get considered for an academic scholarship at UNL?
Every student admitted to UNL is considered for academic scholarships based on their GPA—test scores aren’t necessary.
However, the school recommends you still take the ACT or SAT because a high test score can offset a lower GPA and help you get the most money you qualify for.
